Sleep Disorder Treatment

Sleep apnea is a common problem with a lot of people not even aware that they are sufferers of this potentially deadly disorder. The word apnea has it’s origins in the greek language where it means ‘without breath’ and sleep apnea is a breathing disorder. In this article you will find an explanation of the different types of apnea  and frequent causes also  apnea symptoms with  cure and prevention advice including types of Sleep Apnea Device. Within the site are numerous other articles by sufferers and medical consultants so please browse through them.

First the different types there are 3
Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA is the most common type and as the name suggests its caused by an obstructed airway. Soft tissues at the back of the throat that have become weak due to age, drink or drugs can collapse blocking the airway. Obesity, enlarged tongue, large tonsils, shape of neck and head or nasal congestion from colds, allergies or smoking can all cause OSA which accounts for 85% of cases of sleep apnea.
Central Sleep Apnea or csa is a disorder that comes from the nervous system when signals to the respiratory system from the brain are temporarily stopped. Other medical conditions can trigger this type of apnea like strokes, respiratory disease, brain tumors or an brain injury. CSA accounts for only 1% of sleep apnea cases.
Complex or mixed apnea is a combination of both the above and accounts for 14% of cases.
Snoring is often thought of as being caused by apnea but this is only in some cases as snoring in the majority of cases does not involve a pause in breathing.
Often people don’t know they have this unless their partner tells them as they are sleeping through it and are unaware and don’t remember when they wake up. Even although their sleep could have been interrupted a hundred times they don’t that. Symptoms would include silences during sleep as the breathing stops and sudden gasping as breathing violently restarts. These restarts can in some cases be enough awaken the sufferer. Feeling tired during the day is a sign of restless sleep that could be sleep apnea. If you suspect that you suffer from this sleep disorder a good way of checking is by recording yourself sleeping and replaying it back to see if you are having breathing problems or get your partner to stay awake and note your sleeping habits. These recordings or notes should be kept as if you consult your doctor for a Sleep Apnea Cure they would be interested in them.

Effects on you health as a result of apnea are sleep and oxygen deprivation. Oxygen deprivation to the brain can have serious consequences including heart failure, high blood pressure and memory problems. Sleep deprivation caused by constantly interrupted sleep can leave you run down, irritable and cause you problems with both mental and emotional health.

Sleep Apnea Machines

Sleep Disorder Treatment  in severe cases could be surgery to remove excess tissue, tonsils or enlarge the airways. Less drastic solutions are in the form of a Sleep Apnea Mask called a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) which supplies a  regulated  source of air. Other methods are to use a dental or oral Sleep Apnea Device which adjusts  the jaw and tongue position if this is the cause of your problem.
Sleep Apnea Machines like the cpap are widely available and not expensive.
